Yala Block 6 (Lunugamwehera National Park)

Why Visit Lunugamwehera National Park?

Discover the wild and untamed landscapes of Lunugamwehera National Park, where vast reservoirs, lakes, forests and open habitats create a diverse environment for Sri Lanka’s wildlife.

Step into one of the quieter and more open landscapes of the greater Yala wilderness. Yala Block 6, officially known as Lunugamwehera National Park, offers a very different safari atmosphere, shaped by expansive dry-zone forests, grasslands, wetlands and the vast Lunugamwehera Reservoir.

The reservoir is at the heart of this landscape, attracting elephants, deer, crocodiles and an impressive variety of waterbirds. The park also forms an important wildlife corridor between the greater Yala ecosystem and Udawalawe, making it an important landscape for elephant movement.

For wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, Block 6 offers the opportunity to slow down and experience the wilderness beyond the search for one particular animal. Elephants, spotted deer, wild boar, buffalo, monkeys, crocodiles and diverse birdlife can all be encountered across its varied habitats, while leopards and sloth bears are also present but occur at lower densities.
